So what is “GUNPLA”?

Visit my newly created Gunpla blog at!

Gunpla (ガンプラ Ganpura, a Japanese portmanteau of "Gundam" and "plastic model") refers to plastic and non-plastic model kits that have become popular among anime fans and model kit enthusiasts especially in Japan and in nearby Asian countries since 1980s. Gundam model kits are manufactured by Bandai in Japan – has an exclusive license in manufacturing and marketing the Gundam kits around the world. The first plastic Gundam model kits were sold in 1980 in Japan. (Source)

A plastic Gundam model kit consists of:
  • Model kit box – The box features a cover image of the Gundam in action, small images of different poses and highlights of the model kit. It also shows the details of the Gunpla like its size/grade, the name of the mobile suit and sometimes, the Gundam anime series where it belongs.
  • Runners – These are several plastic trays of parts. The molded parts will be cut out of the runner and then either snap-fit (most models manufactured in 1990 onwards) or glue to put together (older models prior to 1990).
  • Stickers – Stickers will be needed especially for smaller or lower grade kits to apply extra colors and markings.
  • Decals – Most decals are available in bigger or higher grade kits to add more details and elements resembling the real Gundams as seen in anime, movies, manga or video games.
  • Stands – Some model kits actually include specially designed stands for added display capability
